When I look back...
In one way or the other I have been exposed to a few FOSS products ever since I started work and each time I said wow!

It started with PostgreSQL. Then I had a 3 week schedule to build a Jabber based client and server. Then it was Bugzilla for 8 months where I wrote some amount of Perl code and have forgotten all of Perl by now. And now in the last 5 days, I have been extending Tomcat Realms to suite our needs.

And what I see common amongst all is the amazing architecture all these products are built upon. Just yesterday when I completed some part of my Tomcat extensions, I again said, wow!. And I remember the previous instances when I felt the same.

I have read so much code that certain do's and don'ts I have learnt is more from reading than by experiencing myself, by writing code.

Truly awesome!

I've had similar experiences myself, but more on the OS domain. Especially Minix. I know its not marketable or commercial, but that is the only 4000 line kernel I know of, that is based on 15+ years of design decision.
The code is so beautiful that everytime I do something with kernel, I feel guilty... you know the godly beauty touched and maligned by a human hand type of thing. You gotta see it to believe it. Every single part I worked on makes me go WOW...
